Airbus Defence and Space: a leader in the Military Aircraft sector
An Airbus Group daughter company, Airbus Defence and Space –through its Military Aircraft business line– is the global leader in the market for military transport, tanker, fighter and surveillance aircraft.
Airbus Defence and Space is the only military and civic/humanitarian transport aircraft manufacturer to develop, produce, sell and support a comprehensive family of aircraft ranging from three to 45 tonnes of payload as well as combat aircraft and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). Its highly versatile military transport product range includes the all new 37 tonne A400M designed for the needs of the 21st century, the A330 MRTT –the benchmark in Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft–, as well as the robust and service proven, three to nine tonne payload “Light & Medium” Family, comprising the NC212i, the CN235 and the C295 “workhorses”. Airbus Defence and Space has sold more than 1,000 transport aircraft to some 130 military, civilian and governmental customers. More than 800 of these aircraft have been delivered.
This business line also includes Eurofighter Typhoon, the most advanced new generation multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft currently available on the world market. Seven customers (Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Austria, Saudi Arabia and Oman) have already ordered the Eurofighter Typhoon. With 719 aircraft under contract, Eurofighter Typhoon is currently the largest military procurement programme in Europe.
Airbus Defence and Space is the European leader in mastering unmanned aerial systems (UAS) technologies. The company offers a full range of unmanned aerial systems from tactical UAS like Tracker, Tanan and Atlante, medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) systems like Harfang and its contribution to high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) systems. Airbus Defence and Space is also working on the development of next generation systems for a common European UAS (MALE 2020). Finally, it contributes to major Research and Technology programmes like Sagitta and its company-financed Barracuda technology demonstrator.
Headquartered in Madrid (Spain), the company’s Military Aircraft business line facilities are essentially based in Spain and Germany. The Spanish sites are located in Getafe, close to Madrid, where civil Airbus A330 airframes are converted into Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, and Seville, where the San Pablo factory, south of the airport, hosts the A400M Final Assembly Line (FAL) opened in 2007, as well as the CN235 and C295 FAL. In Germany the Business Line is mainly located in Manching, the company's military air systems centre which is Europe's largest of its kind. Besides the Eurofighter Final Assembly Line and the engineering offices for UAS, many kinds of military aircraft are serviced there.
Airbus Defence and Space started operating at executive level as of 1 January 2014, following the integration of former Airbus Military with the defence and space companies Cassidian and Astrium after the EADS parent company rebranding into Airbus Group and its subsequent reorganisation. This integration improves the competitiveness of the group in the defence and space markets. Airbus Defence and Space employs some 38,000 people of which some 10,000 work for the Military Aircraft segment.
Airbus Defence and Space Military Aircraft builds on the experience developed by the former Airbus Military and Construcciones Aeronáuticas Sociedad Anónima (CASA), which was founded in 1923 and became part of EADS, as MTAD, in 2000. Over the years, it has become the reference for development, construction, certification and support of small military transport aircraft, as well as for larger airlifters and multi-role tanker and transport aircraft based on the Airbus civil platforms and technologies. It is now fully in charge of the all new 21st Century tactical and logistical airlifter - the A400M, and the A330 MRTT. Since January, the Eurofighter and the UASs are part of the Military Aircraft portfolio.
